Potent Quotables and Quippy Cliches

A few of my favorite quotes from throughout orientation.  I’ll give credit where I can, but if it’s unattributed, assume that it was delivered via one of the med school’s illustrious faculty.

“Start off as you mean to go”– Basically, now is our only chance to lay a solid foundation for our med student careers. What patterns and habits do I want to set?

“Tough times don’t last, but tough people do”– a women from our patient panel, on the stress of being diagnosed with cancer, again.

“The days are long, but the years are short”– Corollary to the fact that we will be overwhelmed, but should live in the moment.

“Always act with a view of the acquisition of knowledge”– Ancient physician’s oath from Indian subcontinent (excerpt)

“Don’t own the outcome”– Dr. David Rakel, House of Gunderson mentor, on how to forgive oneself

“I welcome you to Madison, I wish you well on this great adventure, and join us in making this the healthiest place on the planet!”– Mayor Paul Soglin
